Institute of Rock and Soil Mechanics (IRSM), the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS),
was founded in 1958. Featured with strong engineering background,IRSM,which is reco
gnized as a high level of geomechanics and geotechnical engineering research institute
at home and abroad, is a comprehensive scientific research institution dedicated to the
basic research and applic ations of geomechanics and geotechnical engineering.In Dec
ember 2001, the Geomechanics Laboratory in IRSM is approved as Key Laboratory of
CAS. With participating in the Knowledge Innovation Program CAS,IRSM has been raise
to a new horizon of research in March 2002.The State Key Laboratory of Geomechanic
and Geotechnical Engineering is approved to constructed in IRSM by the Ministry of Sc
ience and Technology of the People's Republic of China in January 2007.

IRSM is the host of the State Key Laboratory of Geomechanics and Geotechnical
Engineering (a national laboratory), Key Laboratory of Geoenvironmental Engineering of
Hubei province and three other research centers (Chinese Research Center of Geotechnical Engineering, Geoengineering Testing & Measurement Center,
and Research Center for Underground Storage of Energy and Waste). Currently, IRSM has 313 fulltime employees, including one academician of the Chin
ese Academy of Engineering, 30 full professors, and 44 others senior research staffs. In addition, IRSM has more than 127 graduate students, post docto
ral fellows and visiting scholars. Our institute has two conferment points for both doctorial degree and master's degree of engineering mechanic and geo
technical, a station for postdoctoral degree of civil engineering, two stations for master's degree of prevention and mitigation of disaster and protective
engineering and testing technology and automation devices. IRSM is one of the cohosts of the Chinese Society of Rock Mechanics and Engineering (CSR
ME). Meanwhile, IRSM is one of the cohosts of the Professional Committee of Underground Engineering and Underground Space of CSRME, one of the
cohosts of the Professional Committee of Ground Rock Engineering of csrme one of the cohosts of the Professional Committee of Rock Dynamics of CS
RME,and the one of cohosts of the Professional Committee of Geomechanics of the Chinese Society of Theoretical and Applied Mechanics.
